Floor Curling History - Angelene Majeau

My parents, Bill and Florence Soetaert joined the Villeneuve Happy Sixties Club in 1978. The Club was in the process of raising funds to build a meeting room. In 1980 with fund raising, grants and with volunteer labor this Community is know for, a meeting room was built as an Annex to the Community Hall.

In 1987, using the same resources and volunteers, a two lane Floor Curling area was added to the Center. Floor Curling became and continues to be a very popular activity. We have been a member of the Association since 1989.

In 2009, Florence passed away and Bill passed away in 2016. He was a member for 38 years and was President for 22 of those years.

Bill looked after the floors and the rocks with help of members. In 2010 Lou and Lucy Altmiks joined the club and Lou became Bill’s Righthand Man with maintaining the floor and the rocks. Lou build a stand in order to polish the rocks to a great finish. It is used to this day and is a great invention. Lucy is still a member of the club and floors curls.

I (Angeline Majeau) am Bill and Florence’s daughter and I have been a member since 2013. I currently am the president and along with other members look after the rocks and the floors. We have a very active curling club with 3 teams that travel to other senior communities.

It is such an opportunity for seniors to socialize.

My Floor Curling Days - August 2026

Kathy Faoro - Mayerthorpe

Started in the late 1990 or early 2000 at Anselmo Hall on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons at Mayerthorpe Legion.

I think our first A.F.C.A. Tournament was in November 2007 and May 2008.

Tony (my husband), and I started going to tournaments out of town in about 2005 or sooner, but started A.F.C.A. with Eric and Gail Pfannmuller in September 2007. We got our first book of winners that year with pictures in it. We didn’t place too many times but went to a lot of tournaments around North, East and Western Alberta. We were asked by Ami Auger if we would like to go to Slave Lake in the Provincials 50+ Tournament in 2008, so away we went and placed 4th which then we qualified to go to Pierceland Saskatchewan, where we placed 2nd. Our team was Skip - Eric Pfannmuller, 3rd - Kathy Faoro, 2nd - Gail Pfannmuller and Lead - Tony Faoro. After that everyone was told you have to play in Zones before you go to Provincials which we had not done.

2011 - Calder Provincial Tournament 50+ we won 3rd place so we qualified to go to the 4 Western Provinces in Winkler Manitoba but Eric was diagnosed with stage 4 Cancer and we weren’t able to go. This happened to Eric in 2010 and we lost him in late 2011.

Our team changed to Skip - Kathy Faoro, 3rd Gail Pfannmuller, 2nd - Candy Skiba and Lead - Tony Faoro who would not give up that position, from then on we went to more tournaments and in 2012 we entered Whitecourt Provincials and won 1st place. 2012 after Whitecourt we qualified to play in the 4 Western Provinces 50+ in SEESA. We got 3rd place, a wooden plaque and prize money.

2013 - Qualified to SEESA Provincials 50+ and placed 1st. This qualified us to go to 4 Western Provinces in Pierceland Saskatchewan again. We plaed 1st and go to bring home the BIG Trophy.

2014 - Qualified for Provincials in Morinville 50+ and placed 2nd. This qualified us to go to 4 Western Provinces in Tomslake B.C. where we place 1stand go to bring home the BIG trophy again. That year I believe was the end of the 4 Western Provinces Tournaments. Went to Provincials and the was no more 50+ and 70+. Changed the wooden plaques from 4 Western Provinces to Provincials but still got prize money with our plaques, very memorable to this day.

In 2016 we went to Provincials in Spruce Grove where we placed 2nd. In December 2017 I lost Tony and Gail had met William (Bill) Smith and he joined our team.

2018 - We entered Morinville North Division Championships and place 1st which qualified us to go to Provincials in Vegreville where we placed 1st again. We were on a hot streak but soon cooled off, now we win a few and loose a few. Still a lot of fun meeting new and old friends.

We lucked out again in 2024-2025 and placed 3rdin SEESA Championships. No more plaques and no more money but still a lot of fun.
